Jivamukti Yoga: A Dynamic Practice for Body, Mind and Spirit

Amanda Brough • 8 June 2026

If you've ever wondered whether yoga could be more than a physical workout, Jivamukti Yoga offers a powerful answer.

Combining dynamic movement with breath awareness, meditation, philosophy, music and chanting, a Jivamukti Open Class is designed to be a complete yoga experience. More than simply moving through postures, students are invited to explore yoga as a path of self-discovery, connection and transformation.

What is Jivamukti Yoga?

Jivamukti Yoga was founded in New York City by Sharon Gannon and David Life in the 1980s.

Inspired by their studies with renowned spiritual teachers and rooted in the ancient teachings of yoga, they created a method that honours yoga's rich philosophical tradition while making it accessible and relevant to modern life.

The word Jivamukti comes from Sanskrit and translates as "liberation while living" - the idea that freedom, peace and awakening are available to us here and now, rather than somewhere in the distant future.

Today, Jivamukti is practised around the world and is known for its uplifting blend of vigorous vinyasa-based movement, spiritual teachings, devotional practices and compassionate activism.

The Five Tenets of Jivamukti Yoga

At the heart of the method are five core tenets that guide both the practice and the wider lifestyle of a Jivamukti yogi...

Ahimsa (Non-Violence)
Cultivating compassion towards all living beings through our thoughts, words and actions.

Bhakti (Devotion)
Developing a sense of connection to something greater than ourselves through practices such as chanting, gratitude and selfless service.

Dhyana (Meditation)
Training the mind through mindfulness and meditation to develop greater awareness and presence.

Nada (Sound)
Using sound, music, mantra and deep listening as tools for transformation and connection.

Shastra (Scripture)
Studying and reflecting on ancient yogic teachings to better understand ourselves and the world around us.

These principles are woven throughout every class, creating a practice that extends far beyond the physical postures.

What to Expect in a Jivamukti Open Class

A Jivamukti Open Class is a thoughtfully sequenced 90 minute practice that combines dynamic asana, breathwork, meditation, philosophy, music and chanting into one integrated experience.

Classes are rooted in the belief that yoga is more than exercise. Alongside building strength, flexibility and resilience, students are encouraged to explore how yogic teachings can help us navigate the challenges of everyday life with greater clarity, compassion and courage.

Expect an energising and intelligently structured flow that will challenge the body, focus the mind and create space for deeper self-inquiry. You'll move, breathe, sweat, reflect and reconnect—with yourself, your practice and the wider community around you.

Who is the Class For?

Whether you're completely new to Jivamukti Yoga or have been practising for years, Open Classes are designed to welcome a wide range of students. While some familiarity with a flow-based yoga practice can be helpful, modifications and variations allow practitioners to work at a level that feels appropriate for them.

The beauty of Jivamukti Yoga is that it offers something different to everyone. Some come for the physical challenge, others for the philosophy, meditation or music. Over time, many discover that the real power of the practice lies in the way it brings all of these elements together.

If you're looking for a yoga class that nourishes both body and mind, Jivamukti Yoga offers an inspiring and transformative place to begin.
