International Women’s Day: Honouring Strength, Solidarity & Reflection

Amanda Brough • 18 February 2026

Each year on 8th March, the world marks International Women's Day (IWD), a global day recognising the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

But International Women’s Day is more than a celebration. It is rooted in activism.

The first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States in 1909. The idea of an international day followed in 1910, proposed by German activist Clara Zetkin at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. The first official International Women’s Day was marked in 1911 across Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

In 1977, the United Nations formally recognised 8th March as International Women’s Day, helping establish it as the global movement we know today.

2026 Theme: Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls

This year's theme is a powerful reminder that while progress has been made, inequality, violence and systemic misogyny remain very real for millions of women and girls around the world.

International Women’s Day asks us not only to celebrate, but to reflect.

To notice where we benefit from systems that disadvantage others.

To consider how we use our voice, our resources and our spaces.

A Space for Reflection and Embodiment

At HeartSpace, we hold our International Women’s Day workshop in that spirit of reflection.

We recognise that gathering in a yoga studio is, in itself, a privilege.  And we don’t confuse personal practice with political change.

But we do believe that self-awareness matters. That when women learn to trust themselves, speak clearly, set boundaries and support one another, something shifts - even if it begins quietly.

Our Embody Your Divine Feminine workshop is offered as a space for connection, conversation and conscious presence. Not as a solution to global injustice - but as a moment to pause, reflect and recommit to living in alignment with our values.

Because action can take many forms.

And it often begins with awareness.

This International Women’s Day, we honour the global movement for rights and justice - and we gather with intention, humility and solidarity.
